I have a number of Paul Humann Reef Fish identification books. They are very detailed and provide help on fish identification. Although there is extensive information, don't expect every fish to be represented. Also, many fish are very similar or differ from juvenile to adult. You also need to pay attention to the range for the fish in the pictures. You may think you have just found a rare fish when in fact, it does not inhabit the area where you are.All the details of how to use the book are in there so take time to see how to best use this excellent reference.I recently used this book for my dives on the Great Barrier reef and Coral Sea.
I've waited years to buy this as an ebook, but the authors don't seem interested. It is a definitive reference book for the greater Indo-Pacific Ocean, beautifully photographed and with excellent descriptions of more fish than you may ever see, in all phases. The only complaint anyone make is that it is NOT a field guide in the sense of carrying it around on trips - far too heavy - hence the desire fore an e-version. Thankfully, most dive boats/resorts have a copy!
I read the second edition of this book and even though I am a bit disappointed that it omitted some species known from the Hawaiian Islands (e.g. Old Woman Wrasse, Hawaiian Ruby Cardinalfish, Hawaiian Longfin Anthias) given its scope, the authors recognized that manta rays represent two species, and they also follow previous authors in treating the Indo-Pacific eagle ray as distinct from the Atlantic population.
We already had the ones for the Caribbean, so knew the quality. Only criticism is it would be great to know the edibility of the different species of fish. This would help when fishing. Otherwise, it's about as good as it gets for an ID guide.
I already had bought the first edition and bought this second edition to update myself. It is a LOT of information.I recommend it 100%
Great book! Used this in all my dives and the photos are great which makes it easy for identification and the text info are great help as well. Most of the reef fish that I saw are available on the book.As expected, the book is a bit heavy but I do not mind at all since I know it has a lot of information that I need. If you are a frequent traveler and want to travel light you might have some issues with the weight.
Can't fault anything in this book.Perfect companion tool for any professional scuba diver or dive guide. In fact you would be crazy not to have one.Up your FISH ID game with this book, plus if you are like me you can start marking where you saw each animal and make it a bit like Bingo.Happy diving!
Great book, well organized with multiple indexes. All dive boats have this - it is indispensable.
